12.02.2016

Our company specializes in search, processing and analysis of data from the trade registers worldwide, as well as in the study of corporate bonds. Every day we provide statements of Cyprus companies.

We are glad to introduce our study of numbers that characterize Cypriot corporate sector in 2015. Moreover, we selected and analyzed statistical data on more than 400,000 companies in Cyprus since 1900 and want to share the most interesting figures and observations. All charts are interactive: to find accurate data on legal entities for a certain year, just hover your mouse over the chart.

How many companies are there in Cyprus?

The graph shows the number of companies registered in Cyprus since 1970. Data before 1970 can not be considered of particular interest, since almost all of the old Cyprus legal entities are eliminated and the number of active ones does not exceed six thousand.

The total of 6 075 legal entities were registered in 1970, and at the time of 2015 the number of Cyprus companies increased by 66.5 times and amounted to 404 131. It may be noted that the graph of registration of legal entities in Cyprus captures exponential growth. At first glance, it seems that about the same number of firms is recorded each year.

How many companies are registered in Cyprus each year?

However, upon closer inspection you can see that it is not quite so. In this graph it is worth noting the peak of registered companies in 2007 reaching 30 823. Despite the fact that such factor as Cyprus joining the European Union in 2004 and accession to the Euro zone in 2008 has not had a particularly significant impact on the overall trend, reflected in the previous graph, it can be seen in this visualization.

You can see accelerated growth of company registration on Cyprus prior the introduction of the Euro in 2008, followed by decline in the growth rate of new legal entities, continued till 2015. Over the last year there were only 13 146 legal entities, 2.3 times less than in the peak year of 2007.

The peak of 2007-2008 can be attributed primarily to factors such as the economic crisis, accompanied by the desire of business owners to avoid the cost of paying higher taxes and maintain profitability in a face of the global crisis.

The status of Cyprus companies

On this chart you can see not only the number of registered companies annually, but also the number of liquidated entities. Thus, the number of liquidated companies is directly proportional to the number of registered companies in all observed cases since 1970, except for the crisis of 2007-2008, and the last three years. The growth of liquidation of legal entities in 2007, is primarily due to recession of the economy and the fall of the liquidity of many companies.

How much do Cyprus companies live?

The graph shows the number of companies registered in a given year, that are operating at the moment (up to the end of 2015), as well as the proportion of Cyprus companies, which are now in the process of liquidation or have been liquidated. Of course, we see exactly the picture, which suggests our logic: the older the company - the higher is the probability that it will be eliminated. The share of active Cyprus companies, which were registered in a the 70s ranged between 35.55% -57.42%, in the 80s - 37.19% -67.83%, in the 90s - 61.95% -67.19%, from the 2000s - 65.29% -76.61%, and for the last 6 years - 64.93% -99.82%.
